Leadership uncertainty at Sartrouville theater

The leadership of the Sartrouville and Yvelines Theater, part of the National Drama Center (CDN), remains uncertain as the mandate of director Abdelwaheb Sefsaf is set to end on December 31, 2026. The Minister of Culture, Catherine Pégard, has not yet decided on his reappointment, despite the deadline of March 31, 2026, for such a decision. The theater staff has expressed concern over their future, raising questions about the minister's inaction.

Financial challenges for theater productions

Abdelwaheb Sefsaf had prepared financial accounts for the 2026-2027 season, projecting an artistic margin of between 60,000 and 80,000 euros. However, reductions in subsidies—350,000 euros from the Yvelines Department and 41,000 euros from the State—have left him unable to fund productions, which typically cost around 240,000 euros. He stated he is unable to meet the requirements of a National Drama Center.

Public support for Sefsaf’s reappointment

A petition supporting Sefsaf's reappointment has garnered over 4,000 signatures from audiences, artists, and professionals. The petition highlights that a new audience, particularly from popular neighborhoods in Sartrouville, has been drawn to the theater's programming, which resonates with them. The opening of amateur practice workshops has also provided opportunities for many to engage with theater as a form of expression.

Theater’s success under Sefsaf’s leadership

The Sartrouville and Yvelines Theater team noted that the balance sheet from Sefsaf's first mandate shows sustained artistic activity and largely achieved objectives, with an average occupancy rate of 82%. This summer, the theater performed to full capacity with Alif in the "off" category at Avignon on the 11th.

Local political stance on Sefsaf’s role

The LR mayor of Sartrouville, Pierre Fond, had previously expressed a desire for Sefsaf to leave the position. The theater staff continues to await a clear response from Catherine Pégard, the Minister of Culture.
