Hérault faces a 54% rise in dependent seniors by 2050, surpassing regional and national averages, according to Insee's study.
Population aging in Hérault
The Hérault department is facing a significant challenge with an aging population, as shown by a new study from Insee released on October 14. By 2050, the number of dependent people aged 60 or older is projected to rise from 37,000 in 2021 to nearly 57,000, representing a 54 percent increase over less than thirty years.Higher than average growth
This increase in Hérault is more pronounced than both the regional and national averages. The region of Occitanie is expected to see a 45 percent rise in dependent seniors, while the national average is projected to be 35 percent. Only the neighboring Haute-Garonne department is expected to see a slightly higher increase of 56 percent.Regional projections
At the regional level, Insee estimates that Occitanie will have nearly 300,000 dependent seniors by 2050, up from 207,000 in 2021. This would mean an additional 92,600 people who require assistance with daily activities such as moving, dressing, or eating.Demographic shifts
The rise in dependent seniors is largely due to the aging of the baby boom generation, as well as the region’s appeal to retirees. By 2050, the share of people aged 60 or older in Occitanie is expected to rise from 30 percent to 36 percent, affecting nearly 2.4 million people.Gender disparity in dependency
Women will be disproportionately affected by the increase in dependency. In Occitanie, they are projected to make up 67 percent of dependent seniors by 2050, and 72 percent of those experiencing severe loss of autonomy. This highlights a growing gender gap in the aging population.
