Marseille concerned about Greek supporters

Local authorities in Marseille are worried about the arrival of fans from Greek football club Olympiacos ahead of their Europa League match against Olympique de Marseille (OM) on Thursday. The match has been labeled a very high risk for hooligan activity, with a rating of 5 out of 5 by the National Directorate for the Fight Against Hooliganism.

Restrictions on access to stadium area

A prefectural decree has been issued banning anyone who identifies as a supporter of Olympiacos or Red Star Belgrade, or who acts as such, from entering the CEPAC-Vélodrome stadium and from moving or parking in certain areas of Marseille. These areas include the 1st, 2nd, 6th, and 7th arrondissements.

Efforts to stop 1,000 Greek fans from traveling

Authorities are discussing the possibility of canceling the travel of 1,000 Greek supporters for the match. However, implementing such a measure quickly may be challenging, especially if it faces legal challenges in an administrative court. The situation is complicated by the short time remaining before the match.

Greek supporters already in Marseille

Despite the new restrictions, reports indicate that Greek supporters of Olympiacos are already in Marseille or en route, making it difficult for authorities to intercept them. The club has a large fan base across Europe, complicating efforts to control their movement.

Tensions with rival fan groups

Authorities are also aware of connections between Marseille’s ultra group CU84 and fans of AEK Athens, a rival of Olympiacos. These links add to the concerns about potential conflicts. In a recent match in Troyes, supporters of AEK had already joined OM fans in the away parking area, highlighting the risk of escalation.
