Nantes launches inclusive nightlife guide

The city of Nantes has released a new guide called For More Inclusive Nights, designed to help people with disabilities enjoy nightlife and festive events more easily. This booklet, which is about ten pages long, was developed through collaboration between the city, nightlife professionals, and residents.

Collaborative effort for inclusivity

The guide was created from contributions gathered by Le Conseil de la nuit, a platform that brings together the city of Nantes, nightlife professionals, and residents to discuss and improve the nightlife experience. This platform focuses on expression and exchange, aiming to create a more inclusive environment for everyone.

Participants in the project

Seventy people with disabilities, a dozen bar and club managers, and several community groups participated in discussions about how to make nightlife more accessible. These conversations aimed to create spaces for social interaction, celebration, discovery, and personal growth for people with disabilities.

Themes and solutions in the guide

From these discussions, twelve key themes were identified, each followed by potential solutions to improve the nightlife experience. Topics include isolation, fatigue, sensory environments, transport safety, and the need for inclusive spaces. The guide provides a framework for understanding these challenges and offers practical steps to address them.

Guide distribution and accessibility

The guide was first distributed at the start of the academic year at Nantes University. It is also available for download on the Nantes metropolitan area website, making it accessible to a wider audience. The guide aims to support both individuals and venues in creating a more inclusive and welcoming nightlife environment.
