Verso Energy is expanding its focus on energy storage to improve the efficiency of solar power generation. The company has launched its first battery system in Gueugnon, in the Saône-et-Loire department, with a power capacity of 6 MW and a storage capacity of 12 MWh, enough to supply energy for two hours. This project was initiated to address curtailment problems at the Gravières de l'Arroux floating solar power plant, which has a capacity of 23.1 MWc and is expected to be completed in July 2025. According to Antoine Huard, general director and co-founder of Verso Energy, the curtailment is caused by a connection constraint that limits the solar plant's output to 6 MWc.
Until the completion of the source station by Enedis in 2028, the solar plant and battery, though not located in the same area, will be operated together. The battery will store excess solar energy during the day and release it into the grid at more advantageous times. This strategy aims to increase the value of solar energy, which currently faces significant financial losses. The total investment in the solar plant and storage system is approximately 27 million euros.
The battery system was supplied by the Huawei group, while the construction was handled by CEME and Bouhet TP, both local companies. Verso Energy estimates that the Gueugnon site is currently the largest hybrid floating solar power plant in France.
Once the connection constraint is lifted in 2028, the economic value of the battery will shift, with a focus on the aFRR frequency regulation market. In the long term, the company expects revenue to come from various sources, including system services, especially frequency regulation, the capacity mechanism, and intra-day arbitrage, which is expected to become more significant over time.
With this first battery, Verso Energy is accelerating its development in storage and aggregation, which has been ongoing since 2025. After Gueugnon, the company has started construction on a new storage system in Vésigneul-sur-Marne, acquired at the end of 2025. This new system will have 23 MW of power and 46 MWh of storage capacity, nearly four times the size of the Gueugnon project, and will also provide two hours of energy storage.
To manage its batteries, Verso Energy has opted to use its own teams, which handle the operation of the installations and the sale of stored electricity through an internal aggregation process. This strategy reflects the company’s goal to integrate renewable energy production, storage, and electricity use into a single system. The company's objective is no longer just to produce renewable electricity but to shift its usage and optimize its value based on the needs of the electrical grid. In the long term, Verso Energy aims to create synergies between its solar plants and various consumption installations, such as electrolyzers, synthetic fuel production units, charging stations, and data centers.
