The 10th edition of Urbinu in Festa, an environmental event aimed at highlighting the importance of wetlands, will take place on September 29 and 30 at the parking lot of the house of the guards and the restaurant of Urbinu in Ghisonaccia. The event will be open to the public on Wednesday, September 30, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Entry is free, and the event is open to all.
The two-day event will begin with the arrival of groups of children. On Tuesday, September 29, the event will welcome CM2 classes from the elementary schools of Ghisonaccia and Migliacciaru, located in Prunelli-di-Fiumorbo. On Wednesday morning, students from the 4th grade of the Fiumorbu middle school and children from the AFARIF outdoor center will take part in turn.
The program includes eleven educational workshops. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about Corsican birds and waders, pond fishing, amphibians, and the protected coastal flora. The CPIE Bastia will also discuss the presence of the blue crab and the ability of wetlands to trap carbon. Other activities will focus on Mediterranean species, biomimicry, biodiversity, climate change, and the prevention of major risks. These activities will be organized in collaboration with several organizations, including the Corsican Collectivity, the Corsican Natural Spaces Conservatory, the Regional Natural Park of Corsica, the Stella Mare research platform, the Hélios association, and the MAIF. The event also benefits from the support of the DREAL of Corsica, the Ghisonaccia commune, and the MAIF.
Urbinu in Festa was created in 2016 to raise awareness among children and adults about the fragility of wetlands. The Urbinu pond provides a concrete example of such an environment. Located north of Ghisonaccia, this 750-hectare lagoon is the second largest in Corsica. It hosts waterfowl, fish, and vegetation adapted to brackish environments. Recognized as a Ramsar site since 2008, it also illustrates the functions of wetlands: providing shelter for species, storing and purifying water, mitigating floods, and contributing to carbon storage.
