Google's new Android-based PCs, known as Googlebooks, are designed to work closely with Android phones, but users are facing compatibility problems, reports suggest. These PCs are meant to offer a seamless experience with Android devices, allowing functions like copying text from a phone to a computer or sharing files across devices. However, many Android phones are not yet compatible with these features, limiting the functionality for most users. The company's website highlights the "perfect synergy with your Android phone," but this is currently only achievable with a small selection of devices. According to Google's support page, the inter-device features require a phone running Android 17, a version that has been released to only a few models so far. Samsung's latest foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8, come with Android 17 pre-installed. Mishaal Rahman, who manages Android community relations at Google, mentioned on Reddit that the feature will be available on all Samsung devices compatible with Android 17 in the coming weeks. Some users have reported difficulties using the Googlebooks with their current Android phones. One buyer on Reddit said they returned their Googlebook after it failed to work with their Galaxy Z Fold 8, which runs Android 17. At the moment, only Google's own Pixel devices and a few high-end models from Xiaomi and Honor support Android 17. Motorola has begun rolling out Android 17 this summer, but some of its devices are still waiting for the update. Similarly, many other manufacturers, including OnePlus, are expected to release their Android 17 updates later this year. Google's focus on integrating its new PCs with its own Pixel devices has raised concerns about the growing divide within the Android ecosystem. This comes at a time when some Android apps are facing challenges on Intel-based Googlebooks. While Google has made progress in reducing fragmentation by incorporating many features into its Play Services, some tools still struggle to work across all Android devices.
