Mayor Zohran Mamdani and former President Donald Trump met in New York City on Monday, marking the third time they have met since Mamdani took office. This meeting was the first to take place at Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City mayors. The two previously met in November 2023, shortly after Mamdani was elected, and again in February 2024. During the February meeting, Mamdani introduced a proposal for a large housing project in Queens that would require federal funding. A mock-up of a Daily News front page, featuring the headline "Trump To City: Let's Build," was also shown during that meeting. On Monday, the two leaders once again discussed affordable housing, though few specific details were shared. They also touched on immigration, but no concrete plans or policies were announced. Both emphasized that their ongoing dialogue aims to improve the lives of New Yorkers, a theme that has been consistent in their meetings. At a press conference following the meeting, Mamdani outlined his proposal for a housing project in Queens that would involve constructing the world's largest rail deck over Amtrak's Sunnyside Yard. On top of this structure, the plan includes building 12,000 housing units, along with creating 30,000 jobs. The idea was first proposed by former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration. Mamdani said the meeting marked a new step in collaboration between city and federal officials to advance the project. Trump acknowledged the potential of the project, noting that it would require significant federal support and funding. He described the location as "a very federal-oriented job" and praised the area's potential. Support for the Sunnyside Yards project has varied. Carlo Scissura, who was part of the original task force that explored the area's development, praised the meeting, calling it a positive step for the city. He highlighted the project's potential to transform a large, underused area of Queens. However, not all city officials are convinced. Councilwoman Julie Won, whose district includes the rail yard, expressed doubts about the project's timing and priorities. She questioned whether the resources should be directed toward more immediate issues like the housing and healthcare crises, rather than a project that may not be completed for decades. The meeting occurred during the week of the United Nations General Assembly, where Trump is set to address global issues, including the war with Iran, peace in Gaza, and broader international challenges. He is also scheduled to meet with leaders from several countries, including the United Kingdom, Japan, Venezuela, and Ukraine. However, a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been canceled due to scheduling conflicts. Officials said Netanyahu is expected to arrive in New York after Trump has left the city.
