BioWare studio closure confirmed

Electronic Arts (EA) has confirmed the closure of BioWare, a Canadian video game studio established in 1995, and the cancellation of the upcoming Mass Effect 5. The move is part of a larger restructuring plan that includes cutting around 400 jobs, or 3% of EA’s workforce, with about 50 of those positions at BioWare.

BioWare's farewell message

In a farewell post on X, BioWare thanked its players and confirmed that development on Mass Effect 5 has been halted. The studio described the decision as difficult, emphasizing its role as a gathering place for storytellers, developers, and fans who helped bring its worlds to life. The closure ends a major chapter in the history of Western role-playing games.

EA restructures other projects

The restructuring affects other projects at EA as well. Project Lotus, a new game in the Sims franchise, is canceled, while Project Evergreen will continue with a smaller team. EA is focusing its efforts on sports franchises, Apex Legends, Battlefield, and several action-adventure titles. Upcoming projects like Star Wars Jedi and Marvel’s Iron Man remain on track, and Respawn Entertainment and DICE are working on a new Star Wars Battlefront episode.

Mass Effect 5's cancellation and BioWare’s struggles

BioWare had been developing Mass Effect 5, which was expected to take place centuries after Mass Effect 3 and refocus the story in the Milky Way. The cancellation has disappointed fans who were eager for the return of the iconic franchise. The studio had faced commercial challenges, including the lukewarm reception of Mass Effect: Andromeda and the failure of Anthem, a game with strong gameplay but insufficient long-term content.

EA’s financial pressures and strategic shift

EA’s decision to close BioWare follows financial pressures from its $55 billion leveraged buyout, largely backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund. The restructuring reflects a strategic shift to focus on successful ventures, with EA continuing to invest in sports games, Apex Legends, Battlefield, and other core franchises. The company also aims to expand its global presence and transform its business model.

Industry and fan reactions

The closure of BioWare and the cancellation of Mass Effect 5 have sparked widespread grief and nostalgia among fans. Many expressed deep disappointment over the loss of a studio responsible for some of the most cherished games in the industry, marking the end of an era for a legendary name in modern role-playing games.
