OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, has reportedly acquired Glass Imaging, a smartphone camera technology firm, in a deal worth over $300 million. According to the Wall Street Journal, the acquisition marks a significant step for OpenAI as it expands into hardware development. Glass Imaging, founded in 2019 and based in Los Altos, California, had previously raised about $30 million from investors. The company was co-founded by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, both former engineers at Apple who had worked on the development of Apple’s Portrait Mode, a feature that creates a blurred background effect in photos. Glass Imaging specializes in using artificial intelligence to overcome the physical constraints of smartphone cameras. Their technology uses neural networks—systems modeled on the human brain—to analyze and learn about individual camera systems. This allows their cameras to produce higher quality images from the moment the shutter is activated, improving the overall photo experience without requiring larger hardware. OpenAI has not yet commented on the acquisition, but the move aligns with its broader strategy of developing its own hardware. The company is reportedly working on creating its own smartphones, earbuds, and AI-powered companion devices. This push into hardware follows a major acquisition in 2023, when OpenAI acquired the design firm formerly owned by Jony Ive, the renowned Apple designer. At the time, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Ive had been collaborating on a new device startup called io. The acquisition of Glass Imaging suggests that OpenAI is increasingly focused on integrating advanced AI capabilities directly into consumer electronics. By combining its AI expertise with Glass Imaging’s camera technology, OpenAI may be positioning itself to offer more sophisticated smartphone cameras and other hardware products in the future.
