EastEnders, the long-running British soap opera, has welcomed back Ash Panesar, a character who had been absent from the show for three years. Her return has surprised her brother Vinny (Shiv Jalota) and mother Suki Panesar-Unwin (Balvinder Sopal), both of whom have been dealing with their own struggles. Ash, who was last seen in 2023 when she moved to Canada for a new job, is back in Walford at a challenging time for her family. Vinny recently brought his son Ethan home after Penny Branning (Kitty Castledine) gave birth, adding to the emotional atmosphere. Ash’s return has already created tension with her mother, Suki, as old conflicts resurface. Ash is the daughter of Suki and Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry) and the sister of Vinny, Kheerat (Jaz Deol), and Jags (Amar Adatia). The character is now played by Sakira Vel, who takes over from Gurlaine Kaur Garcha, who portrayed Ash from 2019 to 2023. Ash was introduced to the fictional town of Walford seven years ago and had a romantic relationship with Peter Beale (Dayle Hudson), while also navigating her complicated relationship with her father, Nish, who had spent much of her life in prison. Ash’s departure in 2023 was not without conflict. Nish had asked Suki to stop her from leaving, but Suki, wanting to protect Ash from what she saw as Nish’s controlling behavior, helped her leave anyway. This decision strained their already difficult relationship. Since then, Ash has had minimal contact with her family, including her recent marriage, which Vinny attended but Suki was not invited to. Her return is expected to bring further strain between her and Suki. Sakira Vel, who portrays Ash, expressed her excitement about joining EastEnders, calling it an iconic show that shaped her childhood. Executive Producer Ben Wadey noted that Ash’s return is set to bring new challenges for the Panesar family, as unresolved tensions and past conflicts are likely to resurface in the weeks ahead.
