A user recently set up a TP-Link Deco BE25-5G router to keep their home security system operational while moving homes. This device is a Wi-Fi 7 mesh router with a built-in cellular modem, allowing it to maintain an internet connection for the alarm system and cameras without relying on a fixed broadband line. The setup involved inserting a nano SIM card into the router, using the Deco mobile app to configure the device, and connecting existing Deco units as satellite nodes to extend Wi-Fi coverage to areas with weak signals. The router features advanced connectivity options, including two 2.5 Gbps ports and one 1 Gbps port that automatically switches between wide area network (WAN) and local area network (LAN) modes. It also includes a USB port for storage and eight external antennas for 5G/4G/3G cellular connectivity, along with three Wi-Fi antennas. Despite its compact size—118 × 118 × 198 mm—the device consumes up to 25 watts of power. TP-Link claims the router can achieve theoretical maximum speeds of 4.67 Gbit/s via cellular and 2,882 Mbit/s over Wi-Fi 5 GHz, with an additional 688 Mbit/s on 2.4 GHz. However, these speeds are typically not reached in real-world use due to environmental and network limitations. One limitation of the current firmware is the lack of support for combining wireless and wired connections to share both 5G and fiber internet at home. This feature is expected to be added in a future update. The router also includes external antenna ports for users to attach additional antennas to improve coverage in areas with weak 5G signals. The user reported that their security cameras streamed clear video throughout the move, eliminating the need for a traditional fiber internet subscription. However, using a mobile SIM without a public IP address means that port forwarding—used to send video data to a local recorder—is not possible. As a result, the cameras must rely on their manufacturer’s cloud service for storage. The user also highlighted the importance of keeping an eye on data usage, as continuous video streaming can quickly consume large amounts of mobile data. Priced at €399.99 on the official TP-Link store, the Deco BE25-5G is on sale, having originally been listed for €429.99. Although it is a high-cost router, it offers cutting-edge Wi-Fi 7 technology and features such as parental controls, quality of service (QoS) for prioritizing traffic, captive portal for guest access, and local virtual private network (VPN) support.
