Gurshad Shaheman, a French-Iranian artist, presents Cabaret Téhéran, a performance that blends theatre and music to explore fragments of Iran's history through the lens of its pop culture. The show features a translated excerpt from a song by Googoosh, a celebrated Iranian singer. Iranian pop music, which thrived in the 1960s and 1970s, was largely banned after the 1979 revolution, when religious authorities rose to power, leading to the suppression of female vocalists in public performances. Before the 1979 revolution, cabarets were common in Tehran and played a significant role in shaping the city's cultural identity. These venues provided a space for female singers to perform freely until June 1980, when such performances were declared illegal. Through a solo performance that combines theatrical storytelling with song, Shaheman traces the evolution of Iranian pop culture from the 1950s to today, reviving the voices that once filled these now-silent spaces. Cabaret Téhéran is a collaborative effort involving numerous artists and institutions. The production includes contributions from Sarah Jahanbakhsh, Youness Anzane, Mathieu Lorry-Dupuy, Kevin Briard, Lucien Gaudion, Jean-Biche, Zoé Lachaud, Pierre-Éric Vives, Shady Nafar, Jean Fürst, Victor-Hadrien, Emma Garzaro, Anouk Peytavin, and Julie Kretzschmar. These individuals bring diverse talents to the project, enhancing its artistic depth and cultural resonance. The performance will be staged in multiple locations across France and Belgium, including Le Quai in Angers, Le Bateau Feu in Dunkerque, Le Phénix in Valenciennes, and the Théâtre de la Bastille in Paris, among others. The show is scheduled to run from September 2026 through April 2027. It has received support from several funding bodies, including the DRAC, the Hauts-de-France region, and Pictanovo, which have helped bring the production to life.
