The 18th BRICS summit was held in New Delhi, India, on September 12 and 13. BRICS is an international group consisting of five major emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The summit serves as a platform for these nations to discuss global economic, political, and security issues. During the summit, a series of images appeared online that showed Russian President Vladimir Putin alongside other BRICS leaders, seemingly taken during the event. These photos were shared by official accounts, including the Russian and Iranian embassies, as well as a spokesperson for India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The images were initially intended to celebrate the summit and highlight the participation of world leaders. However, the photos were later discovered to be fabricated. Analysis by journalist Jules Boiteau revealed that the images were created using artificial intelligence (AI), a technology that can generate realistic-looking images or videos from text prompts. AI-generated content has become a growing concern in politics, as it can be used to spread misinformation or manipulate public perception. The incident has raised questions about the use of AI in political communication and the need for greater scrutiny of digital content. While the summit itself focused on important global issues, the emergence of these fake images has added a new layer of complexity to international diplomatic events.
