Manufacturing turnover rises slightly in August

According to data published by Insee on October 29, the turnover of the manufacturing industry increased by 0.1% in August 2026, following a decrease of 1.0% in July. The overall index, adjusted for seasonal variations and working days, stood at 122.88 in August, compared to 122.71 in July, on a base of 100 in 2021.

Transport equipment sector sees sharp decline

The most pronounced contrast concerns transport equipment. Their turnover index falls from 146.31 in July to 141.09 in August, a decrease of approximately 3.6% over a month, calculated from the values published by Insee. This movement follows several months of significant fluctuations in this sector.

Other sectors show modest growth

Conversely, equipment goods increase by about 1.5%, with the index rising from 120.93 to 122.74. Other industries increase by about 0.7%, while the food and beverage industries record an increase of about 0.2%. These sectoral variations explain why the stability of the overall manufacturing index does not reflect a uniform evolution of invoiced activity.

Year-over-year growth reaches nearly 2.0%

Over a year, the manufacturing index rises from 120.48 in August 2025 to 122.88 in August 2026, a growth of nearly 2.0% in adjusted data. This comparison relates to turnover and not to the quantities produced.

Turnover reflects both prices and volumes

Insee notes that these indices aggregate the effects of prices and those of volumes. An increase in turnover can thus result from an increase in prices, an increase in sales volume, or both. To separately assess these dimensions, the institute recommends consulting the industrial production indices and the production and import price indices, as recalled in its previous publication on July 2026.

Data subject to revision and updates

The series are also subject to revision as declarations are received and statistical processing continues. The next monthly publication of turnover indices in industry and construction is scheduled for November 26, 2026.
