French public trust in institutions is low

Only 8% of the French population trust political leaders, according to a survey by Ipsos-BVA, while trust in civil servants reaches 33%. Other institutions such as the media and business leaders are trusted by 23% and 28% of the population respectively.

Trust in professionals remains higher

Doctors, scientists, teachers, and the army enjoy significantly higher levels of public trust, with 70% trusting doctors and 63% trusting scientists. The police are trusted by 46%, which is still higher than the trust in political leaders.

Amateur sports referees have a strong public image

Amateur sports referees, especially in football, rugby, and other team sports, are viewed positively by 73% of the French public. Parents and players trust them even more, with 85% holding a positive image of referees in their daily work.

Referees face rising challenges on the field

Referees report an increase in violence and incivility during amateur sports matches, often fueled by frustrated parents who believe their children might become professional athletes. Social media is also contributing to the problem by publicizing and glorifying post-match fights.

Referees feel the job is harder than before

According to surveys, 89% of referees believe their job has become more difficult in the last ten years due to increased aggression and disrespect. This suggests that referees may have valuable insights into maintaining social cohesion in sports and beyond.
