The first Olympic sporting event to be held in Africa will take place in Senegal, with events scheduled in Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly. The Youth Olympic Games (YOG), a scaled-down version of the Olympics aimed at younger athletes, will begin on October 31. In the weeks leading up to the opening ceremony, several initiatives have been launched to raise awareness of the event among audiences who may not typically follow the YOG. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has appointed Brazilian skateboarder Rayssa Leal and Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge as global ambassadors for the Dakar 2026 YOG. These appointments are part of a broader strategy to engage a wide and diverse audience. Rayssa Leal, who is 18 years old, has already won two Olympic medals, including a silver in Tokyo at age 13 and a bronze in Paris 2024. In her new role, she is expected to help promote the event to international audiences. Eliud Kipchoge, a double Olympic marathon champion, will also be present in Dakar and will accompany the first Olympic refugee team participating in the YOG. His presence adds prestige and draws attention to the event. The IOC has also enlisted a diverse group of personalities to support the event, including content creator Khaby Lame, actor Omar Sy, Senegalese international Kalidou Koulibaly, and footballer Ndeye Awa Diakhaté, known as Eva Neymar. Khaby Lame, who has approximately 163 million followers on TikTok, along with audiences on Instagram and YouTube, represents a significant reach. Omar Sy brings a connection to international cinema and television, while Koulibaly and Eva Neymar maintain a presence in Senegalese football. Their involvement is expected to help bridge the gap between the event and local and international audiences. The media plan for Dakar 2026 includes an Olympic Information Service (OIS) responsible for producing competition reports, athlete portraits, interviews, and photographs. These materials are intended to be accessible to the media, national Olympic committees, federations, and athletes for editorial use without rights. However, it is too early to determine the effectiveness of these efforts, as public documents do not yet provide a consolidated global audience target, a definite number of accredited media, or an expected digital reach. The visibility achieved during the Games will be a key indicator of whether the historical significance of Dakar 2026 and the outreach efforts are sufficient to expand its audience beyond the usual YOG audience.
