Gillian Gilbert, keyboardist for the British band New Order, has revealed she is undergoing cancer treatment once again. The 65-year-old musician shared the news on Instagram, responding to comments made by her husband and New Order drummer, Stephen Morris, in an interview with Rolling Stone. Morris had mentioned having a "health problem" that prevented him from traveling abroad for long periods, which some interpreted as a sign he was seriously ill. Gilbert clarified the situation, stating that it was actually her who is living with cancer, not Morris. She explained that the comments had been misunderstood and wanted to ensure the correct information was shared. She also expressed gratitude for the support she has received and asked for privacy as she continues her treatment. Gillian Gilbert has been a member of New Order since the band’s early days. The group was formed in 1980 after the death of Joy Division’s lead singer, Ian Curtis. Alongside drummer Stephen Morris, frontman Bernard Sumner, and bassist Peter Hook, Gilbert joined the band as a keyboardist and guitarist. She recalled in 2023 that joining New Order felt like "a dream come true," even though she initially felt nervous about contributing to the band’s songwriting and had to learn how to play keyboards. Gilbert played and co-wrote songs for every New Order album from their debut Movement in 1981 up until Get Ready in 2001. She later took a break from the band to focus on raising her and Morris’s children, including their daughter Grace, who became physically disabled after an illness. Gilbert previously underwent successful treatment for breast cancer in 2007 and later returned to New Order’s touring lineup. She contributed to the band’s most recent album, Music Complete, released in 2015. New Order is set to embark on a South American tour in November, but Gilbert and Morris will not be part of the live performances—touring musicians will replace them in the lineup. The band will also be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame that same month, marking a significant milestone in their career. Despite the challenges she faces, Gilbert remains a key figure in New Order’s legacy and continues to play an important role in the band’s ongoing journey.
