Haunted houses in France

France is home to eight notable haunted houses and castles, each offering a unique blend of architecture, history, and paranormal legends. These locations, ranging from a Neo-Gothic mansion in Paris to medieval castles and misty abbeys, are said to be inhabited by "white ladies," vengeful ghosts, and other supernatural phenomena. Some of these places even offer overnight stays for the brave.

Villa Frochot's ghostly past

The Villa Frochot in Paris, built around 1839 in the Pigalle district, is a mysterious Neo-Gothic mansion known for its dark woodwork, sharp ironwork, gargoyles, and stained glass. It is associated with mysterious and tragic deaths, including that of a maid murdered on the stairs with a poker in the early 20th century. Singer Sylvie Vartan, who acquired the house, never moved in, and two previous owners died paralyzed in their beds. The villa was eventually exorcised, ending the strange noises.

Château de Puymartin's ghost

The Château de Puymartin in Dordogne, a 15th-century Périgord house, is said to be haunted by the ghost of Thérèse de Saint-Clar. According to legend, she was locked in a cold room in the north tower by her husband in the 16th century and spent the last sixteen years of her life there before her body was walled up.

Château de Fougeret's paranormal activity

The Château de Fougeret in the Vienne, built between the 14th and 16th centuries, is considered "the most haunted in France." It is known for numerous paranormal phenomena, including moving objects, noises, voices, and apparitions. After failing to sell the property, its owners launched spiritual medium evenings and spirit nights in 2010.

Petit Trianon's ghostly encounter

The Petit Trianon in Versailles, a Neo-classical château built by Louis XV, is more known for its idyllic decor than for ghost stories. However, in 1901, two English women encountered strange men and a woman in outdated clothing, as well as a Chinese kiosk, and felt an inexplicable sense of distress. They published an account of their adventure in 1911, suggesting the ghosts of Madame du Barry and the gardeners of Louis XV might have been present.

Sainte-Geneviève des Brumes' cursed past

The manor of Sainte-Geneviève des Brumes, a 12th-century house converted into a charming spa hotel, has a reputation as a cursed place where black magic was long practiced. It is reported to have experienced phenomena such as bangs and slams, bell chimes in the attics, moving objects, a cold breath from certain walls, and the apparitions of Templar ghosts and a phantom coffin.

Mortemer Abbey's haunted ruins

The abbey of Mortemer in Normandy, whose ruins are overgrown with vegetation, is said to be the most haunted in France. It is surrounded by mists and marshes and is associated with legends of monks murdered during the Revolution, a "white lady," and a woman werewolf killed in the 19th century. A stream, born from the tears of Saint Catherine, is said to emit sobs.

Château de Combourg's ghostly legacy

The Château de Combourg in Brittany, built between the 12th and 15th centuries, is famous for being the childhood home of François-René de Chateaubriand. In his Mémoires d'outre-tombe, he described nights of terror with the mewling of a ghost cat and the thudding of a wooden leg. A black cat was buried alive in one of the castle rooms to ward off bad luck, and a mummified cat walled up in the 14th century was discovered by workers. These legends inspired the writer Fred Vargas for her mystery novel Sur la dalle (2023).

Château de Veauce's tragic ghost

The Château de Veauce in the Allier, a medieval fortress with three towers and 108 rooms, is said to be haunted by the ghost of Lucie, an 18-year-old girl who was locked in the keep of the clock tower by the jealous wife of the baron. Over the centuries, many witnesses have claimed to have seen her ghostly silhouette wandering along the ramparts. In 1984, a radio team and paranormal investigators witnessed strange sound and light phenomena there. The haunted tower threatening to collapse is now off-limits, and the castle is for sale.
