Mobile phone found in prison cell

A mobile phone was discovered in a prison cell at Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone, near Montpellier, before an attack on a guard. The device was found during a routine cell change, prompting the incident that followed.

Guard attacked by inmate

On Monday, October 26, a guard at the prison was attacked by an inmate after delivering a meal. The guard was in the process of handing over a bag left behind during the cell change when the incident occurred.

Inmate possessed prohibited item

The inmate was found in possession of a mobile phone, which is not allowed inside the prison. The guard noticed the device when he opened the cell door to deliver the bag.

Alarm system failed

The guard attempted to ask the inmate to return the phone but was refused. The inmate then pushed the guard and tried to perform a choke hold to retrieve the phone. The guard’s alarm, which is supposed to alert colleagues, did not function during the attack.

Reinforcements subdued the inmate

After several minutes, reinforcements arrived and subdued the inmate. The individual was then placed in the disciplinary quarters as a result of the incident.
