Boulinier, a family-run bookstore known for its selection of used books and cultural products, is set to open a new store of about 1000 square meters in Esmans, near Montereau-Fault-Yonne in the Seine-et-Marne department. The store, described as « one of the largest used bookstores in France » in the region, will be located on the route du Petit-Fossard in a commercial area north of Montereau-Fault-Yonne. According to La Republique de Seine-et-Marne, the store will offer thousands of books at low prices. France Travail has published several job offers for the new establishment, including a part-time permanent position for a salesperson specifically linked to « the opening of its new store ». No official opening date has been announced by the store. Boulinier already operates in Seine-et-Marne with a 300 square meter bookstore opened in 2013 in Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne, which remains open. The company also runs four locations in Paris—Saint-Michel, Jourdan, Châtelet, and Bonne-Nouvelle—all dedicated to used books and offering a range of products including books, comics, mangas, CDs, DVDs, and vinyls. Founded in 1845 on the rue des Mathurins, the brand moved to the boulevard Saint-Michel in 1858, with Paul Boulinier purchasing the premises in 1886. The historic address on the boulevard Saint-Michel closed on 30 June 2020 after the lease was not renewed. A new 100 square meter bookstore was later opened at 18, boulevard Saint-Michel in March 2022. The new Esmans store comes at a time when the used book market has become a significant part of book purchases in France. A 2024 study by the Ministry of Culture and Sofia found that nearly 20% of books purchased in France in 2022 were used, despite representing less than 10% of the market value. The price is cited as the primary motivation for buyers in this market. The phenomenon has also attracted new networks, such as Maison de la Presse, which launched a book buyback service with Recyclivre in several of its stores in June 2026. However, the opening of Esmans occurs during a challenging period for bookstores. The National Book Center recorded 83 openings against 85 closures in 2025, the first negative balance since the creation of its panorama, with 57 takeovers. ActuaLitté noted a decline in sales observed at the beginning of 2026 and a broader weakening of sector actors. In this context, Boulinier has chosen a large format, fully dedicated to used books, in a territory where the brand has been established for more than ten years. The company claims to offer 100% used products and books starting from 20 cents.
