Remote desktop app released for macOS
A developer has created and released an open-source remote desktop application called Korben Remote Desktop, designed for macOS, with versions in development for Windows and Linux. The application allows users to control remote machines over a local network or private VPN through an encrypted SSH tunnel, without using any external servers.Features and performance capabilities
The application includes features such as smooth HEVC video, audio, file transfer, app window control, web access, and encryption. It supports smooth video up to 4K with options for different resolutions and frame rates. It handles dropped Wi-Fi connections by treating them as delays rather than losses, and allows users to adjust buffer settings based on their preference for latency or image quality.Audio and control features
Audio from the remote machine is transmitted in Opus format, with no bandwidth used if there is no audio. The application supports mouse, keyboard, and shortcut controls, with specific key mappings to avoid conflicts between the local and remote machines. A game mode allows for precise mouse control, including cursor movement beyond the edges of the screen and support for physical keyboard keys.Multi-screen and sharing options
The application supports multiple screens, allowing users to switch between them or view them all at once. It includes zoom and full-screen features similar to macOS, as well as the ability to open remote application windows as independent windows on the local machine. File and clipboard sharing are supported, with drag-and-drop functionality and the ability to resume interrupted file transfers.Security and connection reliability
The application automatically reconnects if the connection drops, and offers a fallback to Apple's Screen Sharing application if needed. It also allows for remote access through a web browser, with a unique link that is valid for fifteen minutes. The application is secure by default, using SSH tunnels, TLS encryption, and AES-256-GCM for image and sound. It only allows one viewer at a time and requires verification of the certificate fingerprint.Design and compatibility status
The application is designed as a native Mac app, with features such as a sidebar for remote machines, native toolbars, settings windows, and support for dark mode. It automatically detects remote machines on the network using Bonjour. The developer has not yet tested the application on Windows and Linux, and the iOS version is also in development.Limitations and requirements
The application does not currently support remote wake-up, FileVault unlocking after a cold restart, or trackpad gestures such as rotation or three-finger swipe. It requires macOS 14 on both the local and remote machines and has not been fully validated on Apple Silicon or Intel hardware. The developer has not yet submitted the application to the Apple App Store due to potential issues with Apple's approval process.Availability and future plans
The application is 100% free, with no telemetry or ads, and the developer has no commercial plans for it beyond continued improvements. It is available for download at remotedesktop.korben.info.
