Pharmacists gain direct access rights

A recent decree from October 26 allows pharmacists in France to directly manage clinical cases, granting them a new role in patient care. This change aligns with previous steps taken for advanced practice nurses, expanding the range of healthcare professionals who can act independently.

Regulatory details pending

The implementation of this new role for pharmacists, however, is not yet fully defined. It depends on additional decrees and protocols that are expected to be issued by the High Authority for Health (HAS), a French organization responsible for evaluating and recommending healthcare practices.

Professional support and concerns

The Federation of French Pharmaceutical Unions (FSPF) has welcomed the development, seeing it as a positive step toward improving patient access to care. However, MG France, a medical union, argues that the current framework does not adequately address the existing challenges in accessing healthcare services.

Need for further clarification

Experts suggest that the success of this new role for pharmacists will depend on how clearly the upcoming guidelines are defined. These guidelines will determine the scope of their responsibilities and the conditions under which they can provide care independently.
