John Pickles, the founder of the novelty pop group Jive Bunny and The Mastermixers, has passed away at the age of 84, according to the company he established. Pickles created Jive Bunny in Rotherham in 1989, and the group became a significant force in British pop culture, achieving three number one hits on the UK charts with songs like Swing The Mood, That's What I Like, and Let's Party. The group's music was known for blending contemporary pop with classic hits from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, using synthesizers and sampling techniques to create a unique and catchy sound. A statement from Mastermix, the company Pickles founded, described him as "a true pioneer in the music industry," emphasizing his roles as a leader, entrepreneur, businessman, and talented songwriter. The statement also noted that his creativity and passion for music had a lasting impact on many people, and for some, he was also a father. Jive Bunny and The Mastermixers were composed of Pickles, his son Andrew—who later became a director at Mastermix—and Les Hemstock, a DJ and producer from Doncaster. The group released a UK top 10 album titled Jive Bunny The Album and had five top 10 hits, including their number one songs. The group's branding included a cartoon rabbit, with costumed actors appearing in promotional materials and music videos. Steve White, a DJ who knew Pickles personally, told BBC Radio Sheffield that the group's chart success was "a people's success story," something that brought joy to families across the UK. In December 2024, Mastermix released a new Jive Bunny production called 3, 6, 9, which aimed to celebrate the group's origins while incorporating modern influences. This new release highlights the continued legacy of Pickles' work and the enduring appeal of the Jive Bunny brand.
