Amazon Leo and Arianespace have announced six additional launches of the Ariane 64 rocket, increasing their total number of joint missions to 24. The agreement was revealed during the International Space Summit in Paris and extends their partnership through 2031. This comes after a successful start to the year, during which 100 satellites were placed in orbit over five months, demonstrating the efficiency and reliability of the collaboration.
The six new missions will take place between 2029 and 2031 from the spaceport in French Guiana. These launches will use the Ariane 64 rocket, which features four solid-fuel boosters, offering greater payload capacity compared to previous models. The original contract, signed in 2022, called for 18 launches in the Ariane 64 configuration. With the new additions, the total number of launches will increase to 24, with all missions scheduled from 2029 to 2031.
Arianespace CEO David Cavaillolès highlighted the significance of the extended partnership, stating it reflects confidence in the Ariane 6 rocket’s performance and reliability. Chris Weber, vice president of Business and Products at Amazon Leo, emphasized the strategic importance of Europe’s launch infrastructure for building Amazon’s satellite constellation. To date, more than a quarter of Amazon Leo’s satellites have been launched from French Guiana, including three successful missions in 2026.
A notable milestone was the June 17 mission, VA269/LE-03, which saw the Ariane 6 rocket launch 36 satellites in a single mission using new P160C boosters. This marked a record for the launcher and highlights the increased payload capacity provided by these advanced boosters. Amazon Leo still needs to deploy thousands more satellites to meet its commitments to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and to compete with services like Starlink. The expanded contract with Arianespace ensures a strong position for European launch capabilities in the growing commercial satellite industry while supporting future national and continental satellite constellations.
