Sweden has summoned Iran’s ambassador and ordered the expulsion of one of his staff members due to activities deemed "incompatible with the Vienna Convention" on diplomatic relations, according to a government statement. The Swedish government did not immediately reveal the identity of the expelled individual or provide specific details about the alleged violations. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer noted that Iran has long conducted operations in Sweden targeting individuals who oppose the Iranian regime and Jewish and Israeli interests in the country. He stated these actions were carried out by criminal networks but offered no further explanation. The Iranian embassy in Sweden did not respond to requests for comment from AFP. In May 2024, Sweden’s intelligence agency, Säpo, claimed that Iran was recruiting members of local criminal gangs to conduct "acts of violence" against Israel. Tehran denied these allegations. A Säpo spokesperson declined to comment on the government’s recent announcement, citing that it falls under the agency’s classified intelligence work. Since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023, several Israeli interests in Sweden have been targeted, particularly in 2024. In February 2024, a grenade was discovered near the Israeli embassy in Stockholm, prompting increased security. In May of the same year, gunfire was heard outside the embassy, leading to heightened precautions around Jewish and Israeli sites in the country. On October 10, 2024, a 13-year-old boy opened fire in front of the offices of Elbit Systems, an Israeli military technology firm based in Gothenburg, known for producing drones and other defense equipment. Diplomatic relations between Sweden and Iran have remained strained for several years. In mid-March 2024, an Iranian-Swedish citizen was executed in Iran, accused of spying for Israel—a decision strongly criticized by Sweden. Another Iranian-Swedish national, Ahmadreza Djalali, has been imprisoned in Iran for nearly a decade. In 2017, he was convicted of collaborating with the Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency, a charge he has consistently denied.
