New waste sorting system starts in Toulon

Since November 1, residents of Toulon and the surrounding area are using yellow bins to collect household packaging and paper. This marks the beginning of a new sorting system introduced by Toulon Provence Méditerranée, which combines plastics, metals, cardboard, and paper into a single bin or column.

Yellow bin includes specific materials

The new system places packaging and paper in the yellow bin, while glass bottles, jars, and containers remain in the green-lidded columns. Residents must follow a guide provided by SITTOMAT, which outlines what materials are accepted, and avoid placing items like toys, electrical appliances, or containers with food residue in the yellow bin.

Instructions for proper sorting

Residents are instructed to empty packaging, place them loosely in the bin, and avoid using closed bags or nesting items. Caps can stay on plastic bottles, and washing is not required. These steps help sorting equipment at the center recognize and process the materials more efficiently.

Old gray bins being phased out

The gray bins, previously used for collecting certain packaging, are no longer used for selective collection. The metropolitan area plans to gradually recover these bins for reuse or recycling. In buildings, gray bins will be replaced by yellow bins as the rollout progresses, while green-lidded columns will also be adapted.

Collection days are changing

The change in waste sorting is accompanied by revised collection days in several communes and neighborhoods. Some areas may have one to two pickups per week, and residents must check their specific calendar for details. The SITTOMAT website and the Trizzy app provide information on collection schedules.

New sorting center to handle waste

The new sorting system is supported by a modern sorting center in La Farlède, part of the Toulon-Est industrial zone. This facility will handle the collected packaging and paper starting in December 2026. Until then, residents are encouraged to follow the updated sorting rules and check their local collection calendars.
