CAC 40 futures fall ahead of session
The futures contract on the CAC 40, a major French stock index, dropped by 0.57 percent about forty minutes before the trading session began. This decline occurred despite the index having closed on Friday with a modest gain of 0.28 percent, reaching 7,956.70 points.French stock market underperforms in 2026
The Paris stock exchange has had a weak year so far in 2026: the CAC 40 has fallen by 2.37 percent since January 1. In contrast, the European benchmark index, the Stoxx 600, has risen by 8.87 percent during the same period.Violence shakes French cities
On Saturday, widespread looting, destruction, and riots broke out in many French cities following a nationwide mobilization for purchasing power. The scale of the unrest surprised the country, leading to around 2,400 arrests and nearly a thousand injuries among police and gendarmes.Businesses face significant damage
According to the French chambers of commerce and industry (CCI France), more than 2,000 businesses were directly affected by the weekend's violence. The Federation of Trade and Distribution (FCD) estimates the damage costs to be in the range of several hundred million euros.Market concerns over bond yields
Kathleen Brooks, director of research at XTB, warned that the weekend's violence and demonstrations in France could affect the spread between French and German government bond yields early in the following week. The spread between the ten-year French and German borrowing rates reached 137 basis points on Friday, a level last seen during the European debt crisis in 2012.Budget tensions may widen bond spread
Brooks noted that the spread could widen to 150 basis points as political and social pressures build while France works to create a strict budget for next year. Deputies are set to vote on Tuesday on the revenue for the 2027 budget, which plans for 43 billion euros in savings.Euro weakens against the dollar
In the foreign exchange market, the euro fell 0.15 percent around 08:15 against the dollar, trading at 1.1222 dollars per euro. Brooks warned that if the riots boost support for Marine Le Pen, who is opposed to the European Union, the euro could face further declines.
