Bungie, the game development studio behind the Marathon franchise, has shared more details about an upcoming update called Symbiosis, set to release in December. This update will add a team deathmatch mode for competitive play and a PvE (player versus environment) mode that will be available at all times. The PvE mode is designed to let players practice and refine their skills without facing other players, though specific details about how it will function are still being worked out. The game's starting area, known as the Perimeter zone, will also receive a visual overhaul and new challenges, including a boss called the Tick Queen. In addition to these changes, Symbiosis will introduce a new shell archetype called the Bishop, which Bungie describes as a "high-performance robot samurai." This new character type is intended for more experienced players looking for a greater challenge. To help newcomers get started, the update will also include a social space with a firing range, providing a more welcoming environment for less experienced players to learn the game's mechanics. Looking ahead to 2027, Bungie has announced plans for a major update scheduled for March. While they have not yet given it a name, the studio described it as "meaningfully larger than Symbiosis." This update will bring a more interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP (player versus player), and PvEvP (player versus environment and player) experiences. Additional features include improved onboarding for new players, a new game zone, new alien enemies, deeper progression for the shell system, and more focused storylines and narrative elements. Bungie claims that these updates will create a solid foundation for Marathon to continue evolving throughout 2027, offering more content and gameplay options for players of all skill levels. The studio is clearly committed to expanding the game's world and improving the overall player experience in the coming months.
