Two years after her acclaimed work L'œil nu, choreographer Maud Blandel returns to the Autumn Festival with Same Old Songs, a new performance inspired by the writings of Virginia Woolf. The piece is based on Woolf's 1938 text Three Guineas, which discusses themes of war, education, and gender. Same Old Songs uses Woolf’s epistolary style—writing in the form of letters—as a starting point, but transforms it into a surreal, hallucinatory experience. The performance explores alternative visions of the future through movement and sound, rejecting conventional order in favor of chaos and unpredictability.
The piece is driven by a percussive soundscape created by percussionist Romain Simon and others, with Maud Blandel herself contributing to the sound design. The music and movement work together as a dramatic force, with the dancers—Jessica Allemann, Lou Couton, Karine Dahouindji, and Maya Masse—taking on alternating roles. The performance is intentionally anarchic, emphasizing physical intensity and emotional extremes. Rhythmic moments are contrasted with moments of stillness, and any attempt at synchronized movement is deliberately disrupted, creating a sense of tension and unpredictability.
Same Old Songs is a collaborative effort, with Maud Blandel as the director and choreographer, and contributions from sound creators Romain Simon, Flavio Virzì, and Maud Blandel. Stage management and sound design are handled by Simon Leopold, while lighting is by Gautier Teuscher and costumes by Julia Bothelo. The production is supported by several institutions, including the State of Vaud, the City of Lausanne, and the Swiss Foundation for Culture, among others. It is part of the European project "Lifelong burning," which fosters creative collaboration across borders.
Maud Blandel is an associated artist with CNDC–Angers, a leading contemporary dance center in France, and Bonlieu Scène nationale d'Annecy. The company I L K A, which produces the show, has long-term agreements with the City of Lausanne and the canton of Vaud. Same Old Songs will be presented at the Theatre Public de Montreuil—Centre dramatique national in Paris from 20 to 25 November 2026, in collaboration with the Swiss Cultural Center and the Autumn Festival. Additional performances are planned at CNDC Angers from 3 to 4 December 2026 and at Bonlieu – Scène Nationale in Annecy from 9 to 11 February 2027.
