Students join geological expedition
Eighteen young people took part in the MAYOBS 36 expedition, which focused on monitoring seismic and volcanic activity in Mayotte, a French island in the Indian Ocean. Partnership with research institutions
The students from the EBO (École bleu Outre-mer) joined the expedition, which was organized by IFREMER in collaboration with scientists from the Institut de physique du globe de Paris (IPGP), the BRGM, the national geological service, and laboratories of the CNRS-INSU. Background of volcanic activity
The expedition took place after the island of Mayotte had experienced ongoing seismic and volcanic activity since May 2018, which included a series of earthquakes and the formation of a new volcanic structure. Study of Mount La Pérouse
During the three-week expedition, the young participants also studied Mount La Pérouse in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Réunion for two days, gaining hands-on experience in geological research. Return to IFREMER headquarters
The students returned to the IFREMER headquarters at the Port, where they shared their experiences and findings from the expedition with staff and researchers.
