A security guard has died after being struck by a ride at Munich’s Oktoberfest just 10 minutes before his shift was scheduled to end. Aleksandar Spasic, 52, was working at the world-famous beer festival in Germany when he was hit by a descending carriage of the "Hangover" ride around 9:50 pm on Monday. The ride, which is a popular attraction at the festival, features a free-fall element that can reach speeds of up to 56 miles per hour, though it slows significantly before reaching the bottom. It is unclear how fast the ride was moving at the time of the incident. Mr. Spasic, who is 6 feet 7 inches tall, was struck and immediately taken to the hospital, where emergency crews performed CPR. Despite their efforts, he died shortly after. Mr. Spasic’s wife, Adrijana, 47, said she had spoken to him just 75 minutes before the incident. Their son, Lazar, had previously warned his father about working at the festival, expressing concerns about the risk of harm from intoxicated visitors. Lazar said, "Dad, don't go to Oktoberfest, it's a bad place to work." According to Lazar, his father had been working for the security company for three months and was known for being extremely cautious about putting himself in danger. Just the day before the incident, Mr. Spasic had refused to retrieve a lost item from another ride because he felt it was too dangerous. Lazar believes a similar situation may have led to his father being in the restricted area when the accident occurred. He said, "Nobody is supposed to go into that area — it's strictly off-limits. Maybe a visitor had dropped their glasses or phone, and my dad went in to retrieve it and help them." However, there is currently no confirmation that Mr. Spasic had entered the area to retrieve a lost item. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. A spokesperson, Thomas Schelshorn, said officers are examining "whether someone can be held responsible." The incident has raised questions about safety protocols at the festival and the conditions under which security personnel are required to work. The Oktoberfest, which attracts millions of visitors each year, is known for its lively atmosphere, but this tragedy has brought renewed attention to the risks faced by those working the event.
