Former President Donald Trump has faced criticism for sharing a proposed design for Space Force uniforms on social media. The design features a charcoal-colored collared jacket, black pants with a black belt, black boots, and a matching cap. The Space Force Delta symbol appears on the collar, sleeve patch, belt buckle, and front of the cap. The graphic accompanying the design described it as "inspired by the discipline and functionality of the Starship Trooper uniform, modernized for the guardians of the space domain." The design has drawn comparisons to costumes worn by sci-fi villains and, in some cases, to historical uniforms associated with authoritarian regimes. Some social media users noted the inspiration from the 1997 film Starship Troopers, directed by Paul Verhoeven, who grew up in Nazi-occupied Netherlands. The film portrays a futuristic Earth ruled by a fascist regime fighting against alien insects. Others pointed out the resemblance to the uniforms of the evil forces in Star Wars, such as those worn by the Galactic Empire under the rule of Emperor Palpatine. The design has also been likened to the uniforms of the Imperial Forces in the 1987 parody film Spaceballs, which humorously satirizes Star Wars. Jonah Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Dispatch, raised concerns about whether those involved in the design understood the intended message of Starship Troopers, which is a critique of militarism and authoritarianism. Christian broadcaster Erick Erickson described the uniforms as "a cross between Star Trek in the symbols and Imperial Forces from Star Wars," while conservative critic Jennifer Zilla acknowledged the similarity to Star Wars uniforms but still supported the Space Force initiative. It is unclear whether Trump intended to push for the design to be adopted or if the post was simply a routine social media update. The Independent has contacted the Space Force and the White House for further comment, but no official response has been provided yet.
