Gabriel Jesus has officially moved from Arsenal to Barcelona in a permanent transfer, completing the deal on transfer deadline day. The 29-year-old Brazilian striker signed a three-year contract with the Spanish champions after Arsenal accepted a reported £12.8 million offer, which included a sell-on clause. Jesus joined Arsenal from Manchester City in 2022 for £45 million and scored 32 goals in 123 games for the North London club. He previously won four Premier League titles with Manchester City and a fifth with Arsenal last season. At his unveiling with Barcelona, Jesus was asked about his signing being seen as a backup plan after the club had pursued Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez. He responded that the perception did not bother him. In recent seasons, Jesus had fallen out of favor at Arsenal due to injury problems and competition from other strikers like Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres. He made only 14 Premier League appearances last season as Arsenal won their first league title in 22 years. Arsenal released a statement thanking Gabriel Jesus for his contributions during his four years with the club and wishing him and his family happiness and success in the future. Jesus is the second player to leave on deadline day, following Fabio Vieira, who has signed with Bundesliga club Hamburg. Vieira joined Arsenal from Porto in 2022 for £34 million but only made five Premier League starts before being loaned back to Porto. He expressed his excitement about returning to Hamburg, where he previously played. It remains unclear whether Arsenal’s summer transfer activity is complete as the deadline approaches. The club has signed several players, including Bruno Guimaraes, Ezri Konsa, and Christos Tzolis, and has made Piero Hincapie’s move from Bayer Leverkusen permanent. They also signed goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who will serve as backup to David Raya. Despite the transfers, Arsenal have started the season strongly, winning the Community Shield and their first two Premier League matches.
