Jade Thirlwall, a former member of the girl group Little Mix, has shared that she lives with a rare condition called Retrograde Cricopharyngeal Dysfunction (R-CPD), which stops her from burping. This condition causes symptoms like chest pressure, severe bloating, and painful trapped air. Thirlwall, now 33, found comfort after connecting with a TikTok community of others who also have R-CPD. She commented on a video by Gemma Renwick, who is raising awareness about the condition, saying, "Omg I finally feel so seen and understood." While she has always found it amusing that she can't burp, she has faced challenges related to the condition throughout her life. Thirlwall has spoken about the frustration of people commenting on her weight, saying she is "sick of people commenting on my weight and body onstage when I'm just bloated af." She has considered a botox treatment, known as "throtox," to manage her symptoms but is concerned it might affect her vocal cords. Renwick has started a petition calling on the government to review how well R-CPD is recognized and treated within the National Health Service (NHS). The petition has gained over 4,800 signatures, and Thirlwall has shared Renwick’s video to help spread awareness. Thirlwall briefly mentioned her struggle with R-CPD on TikTok in 2023, captioning a video, "Shout out to my fellow 'no burp syndrome' queens," and adding, "I've never burped in my life but I'm still stunning." She has been open about her relationship with her body, having been diagnosed with an eating disorder, anorexia, at age 13. Recently, she has spoken about her "daily battle with myself not to go on Ozempic" due to negative comments about her weight online. Thirlwall emphasized that Little Mix fans were always about empowerment and celebrating bodies, and now in her 30s, she feels healthier than ever. However, she still faces comments like, "She must be pregnant," when she posts pictures online. She notes that these comments often come from women and are usually based on how she looked in her early 20s when she was very thin due to an eating disorder. Thirlwall has been busy with her solo career, performing at festivals and attending events, such as the wedding of her former Little Mix bandmate Perrie Edwards. She has also been dealing with the breakup of her six-year relationship with Jordan Stephens. A spokesperson for NHS England noted that clinical evidence about R-CPD is "extremely limited" due to the small number of people who are aware of the condition. However, NHS staff follow guidelines from NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence), which provides recommendations for the care and treatment of various conditions.
