A 35-year-old man currently under investigation in Nîmes has asked for his release from custody, claiming he is unwell and not receiving proper medical care in prison. He has been detained since May 2023 after an incident in the Vaucluse region. The man mentioned he has two accommodation certificates—one in Paris with his brother and another in Nîmes—but he does not know the exact address associated with either. He stated that if released, he would look for work. The accused, who has no prior criminal record, was mentioned by prosecutor general Dominique Sié, who opposes the release due to the seriousness of the alleged crime and to prevent the possibility of it happening again. The man, who is not represented by a lawyer, defended himself by saying he had consumed a large amount of alcohol and drugs at the time of the incident. The incident occurred over two consecutive days in the Vaucluse. On May 6, 2023, a bus traveling from Nice was on the road around 9 p.m. when a man approached the driver. The bus veered off the road at the junction between the A7 highway and another route. The driver did not have time to react, and the individual took control of the wheel, making a violent turn that sent the bus downhill toward a retention basin in Piolenc near Mornas. The bus was stopped, and several passengers were injured. The driver reported that the suspect ran away and may have said, "Allah Akbar," though this was uncertain. A vegetation fire later led to the suspect's arrest. The following day, while the suspect was being sought, gendarmes from the Vaucluse intervened for a vegetation fire on a rest area on the A7 highway in Mornas. Two gendarmes checked a man with a suspicious demeanor near the fire. The suspect was armed with a metal bar and did not follow instructions, shouting "Allah Akbar" as he approached them. One of the gendarmes opened fire, injuring the suspect, who was then treated by emergency services. The national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office was alerted but did not take over the case, which remained under the jurisdiction of a judge in Avignon. The 35-year-old was kept in custody by the court of appeal in Nîmes due to the seriousness of the facts. The case has drawn attention due to the suspect's actions and the involvement of potentially dangerous behavior. The legal process continues, with the accused still awaiting a decision on his request for release.
