A French court is currently examining the actions of Rohan Rane, a 29-year-old Indian national who was arrested in Antibes and is accused of leading a network described as "violent nihilist extremist." The trial involves six American victims, with another trial involving other victims expected to take place in the United States. In France, Rane faces the possibility of life imprisonment. The victims, who were minors at the time of the alleged acts, reportedly suffered psychological trauma and some had to undergo years of therapy. Some had even attempted suicide. Rane's lawyer, Me Hippolyte Marquetty, stated that Rane appears cold and manipulative, using repeated lying as a tool for creating a dominant and frightening character online. His ideology, according to the investigation, included elements of fascism, neo-Nazism, and masculinism. However, Marquetty suggested that Rane's actions were driven by a pathological need for domination rather than political ideology. He was the leader of a Discord community of young men fascinated by ultraviolence and the submission of others. Rane is accused of pushing young girls to commit acts of self-mutilation, including drawing swastikas on themselves, carving his name with a razor blade, inserting a knife into intimate areas, and drinking their own urine. He allegedly initiated pseudo-relationships online, obtained personal information, and then used photos and threats to exert pressure on victims, including threatening to inform their parents or friends. The process of "seduction" was not systematic, and the threats and manipulation techniques could be more immediate in some cases. The victims, some of whom belonged to the LGBT community, Jewish, or Black communities, experienced long months or years of attempts at reconstruction, were withdrawn from school, and experienced extreme trauma. The trial is taking place in closed session due to concerns about the safety of the victims and the need to preserve their anonymity. The victims, now between 19 and 21 years old, had never seen Rane's face and were subjected to online manipulation. The trial is seen as having a personal cathartic purpose for the victims and aims to raise awareness about the dangers of social networks. Some have expressed the need for a partially closed session to allow for public debate on the issue, given that Rane inspired other groups that continue their activities.
