Audio consumption in France is experiencing a transformation as the boundaries between live radio, streaming, and podcasts continue to blur. With 43 million daily listeners, audio has become the preferred medium for a significant portion of the population. Emmanuelle Le Goff, Director of Radio and Total Audio at Médiamétrie, highlighted this during the 2025-2026 edition of L'Année Audio, a report by the audience measurement company. According to the report, 83% of those aged 15-80, or 43 million people, listen to at least one audio offering every day. This number increases to 50 million listeners over a month, with 87% of these monthly listeners also being daily listeners. Audio consumption spans across generations, with daily coverage reaching 87% among 15-24 year olds and 75% among those aged 65-80.
Radio remains the dominant form of audio consumption, accounting for 53% of daily listening time, ahead of musical streaming (34%) and other offerings like audiobooks and podcasts (8% and 4%, respectively). Including both radio and native podcasts, podcasts account for 10% of the audio listening volume. Among daily podcast listeners, 47% often choose the recorded version. Radio remains central in French life, with 66% of French people listening to it daily and 96% over a month. The average listening duration is 2 hours and 47 minutes per listener, or 15% of the time between 5 am and midnight.
Digitalization is also on the rise in radio consumption. Digital devices now account for 27% of the radio listening volume, up 10 points in five years. Smartphones alone represent 16% of the volume, an increase of 8 points, while voice-controlled speakers account for 4%, up 2 points. Despite this, traditional radio sets and car radios still account for 73% of the listening volume. The car represents 34% of the radio listening volume. "In an increasingly fragmented media universe, radio retains a rare strength: it accompanies the French throughout the day, retains their loyalty, and gathers them around major events," said Emmanuelle Le Goff.
Audio consumption is also split between on-demand and live content, with 53% of time spent on on-demand content and 47% on live content. From a usage perspective, these distinctions are largely theoretical, as most listeners combine both formats. Over a month, 77% of listeners use both live and on-demand content, while 79% use both offline and digital formats, and 78% combine spoken and musical content. "The French do not choose a single audio offering, they build their own listening path," summarized Cécile Bertrand, Director of Audio at Médiamétrie. Audio consumption practices vary significantly across generations, with younger listeners favoring music and digital formats, while older listeners prefer traditional radio and spoken content.
