The European Central Bank (ECB) is currently inviting the public to participate in a consultation on the design of new euro banknotes. The consultation, open until Monday, September 21, allows people to choose between two proposed designs. One option features historical figures in the arts and sciences, such as the opera singer Maria Callas, the scientist Marie Curie, the composer Beethoven, and the writer Cervantes. The other option focuses on Europe’s ecological heritage, with images of birds and landscapes meant to symbolize the European Union’s environmental goals. The new banknotes will also include updated security features to make them more difficult to counterfeit. These enhancements are part of a broader effort to modernize the euro currency. The new designs are expected to be released into circulation within two to four years, depending on the outcome of the consultation and the final design decisions. Philippe Geoffroy, the head of the ECB’s new banknotes project, has not taken a public position on which design option should be chosen. He noted that people generally do not form strong emotional connections with banknotes, and that the current design—introduced nearly 25 years ago—has become too neutral over time. This neutrality, he suggested, may not effectively reflect the diversity and values of modern Europe. The consultation represents a rare opportunity for the public to influence the visual identity of the euro. While the ECB is responsible for the design, it is seeking input to ensure the new banknotes resonate with people across the continent. The final decision will be made by the ECB’s governing council after reviewing the public feedback and other considerations.
