Statements about empty wallets have been circulating on X, formerly known as Twitter, for several hours, and the source of the problem now appears to be identified. Ledger, a French manufacturer of physical wallets for cryptocurrencies, published a warning to its customers on Friday, October 9. The company indicated that it is investigating reports of lost funds from users who had purchased their devices from CryptoBilis, a reseller operating in Southeast Asia. Pending the conclusions, Ledger has asked this reseller to suspend all sales and shipments of the company's products. More than 86 million dollars stolen according to initial estimates. The extent of the theft has not been confirmed by Ledger, but independent investigators have begun to trace the funds. Specter, an investigator specializing in blockchain analysis, identified several addresses to which the stolen funds were transferred and found payments from several hundred victims' wallets. These thefts concern several major blockchains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tron, and the total amount would exceed 86 million dollars according to his calculations. Another security researcher, tanuki42, had previously suggested a figure higher than 72 million dollars, specifying that the total continued to increase, which suggests that the balance is not yet fixed. What Ledger recommends in the meantime. Ledger has not yet explained how the funds could have been stolen, nor whether the devices sold by CryptoBilis had been modified. In the meantime, the company is asking people who have purchased a device from this reseller in the last 90 days not to set it up, or, if it has already been done, to consider transferring their assets to a new Ledger device initialized with a new recovery phrase. The company has committed to keeping its customers informed and refers all questions to its official support.
