The recent decision by former US President Donald Trump to replace the term "artificial intelligence" (AI) with "super intelligence" (SI) has unexpectedly led to a surge in interest in internet domains with the ".si" extension, which is reserved for Slovenia. According to local officials, this increase in demand became noticeable shortly after Trump's comments during a speech at the United Nations General Assembly last week. During the speech, Trump stated that the US government would adopt the term "super intelligence," or "SI," explaining that it "sounds much better" and is "much more appropriate." He argued that "artificial intelligence" might give the impression that the technology is not real or reliable, when in fact it is "incredible." Trump emphasized the need for caution while embracing the advancements of such technology and said the US would begin using "the much more precise term of 'Super Intelligence'" in its official documents. Following this announcement, there has been a noticeable rise in the number of requests for domains with the ".si" extension. Klara Herman, a spokesperson for Register.si, the organization responsible for managing Slovenia's internet domain, told AFP that there has been a "significant but steady increase" in requests since Trump's speech. Despite this surge, she noted that the agency's operations have not been disrupted. Register.si has advised individuals and businesses who do not yet have a ".si" domain to consider registering one as soon as possible. The increase in demand is substantial: approximately 3,500 ".si" domains were registered in August, but since Trump's comments, the average daily registration rate has risen to around 3,700. According to the latest data from the agency's website, the total number of registered ".si" domains surpassed 220,000 on Tuesday.
