OpenAI has recently introduced access to its latest GPT-6 models for users of ChatGPT Plus, but these models are only available in Work mode. Previously, users could use ChatGPT without much concern for the difference between Chat and Work modes. Now, the new GPT-6 models—GPT-6 Astra, Sol, and Luna—are only accessible through Work and Codex interfaces, not through the standard Chat interface.
Chat and Work modes serve different purposes. In Chat mode, users typically engage in a back-and-forth conversation, providing input step by step and guiding the AI’s responses. Work mode, on the other hand, allows users to assign more complex, multi-step tasks to the AI, such as researching information, analyzing documents, or even using the internet independently. This shift reflects a growing emphasis on using AI for more specialized and professional tasks.
Among the new models, GPT-6 Astra is described as the most advanced and capable model, designed for tasks that require high levels of intelligence and precision. OpenAI has also released two smaller and more cost-effective models: GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. These models offer many of Astra’s features but are optimized for speed and affordability, making them suitable for a wider range of users.
GPT-6 Astra has been available since earlier this month, and a version called GPT-6 Pro, which is powered by Astra, can be accessed through regular Chat on higher-tier plans. However, ChatGPT Plus users can only access these models through Work and Codex. In Work mode, users have several options to choose from, including GPT-6 Luna High, GPT-6 Sol Light, GPT-6 Sol Medium, GPT-6 Astra Light, and GPT-6 Astra Medium, each tailored for different types of tasks.
This change highlights OpenAI's effort to clearly separate the AI's role in casual conversation from its role in handling complex tasks. While both modes use the same interface, Work mode is designed for longer, more intricate tasks, which can lead to slower response times compared to the more streamlined Chat mode.
