Lufthansa Group is rolling out a new Travel ID system for online check-in, requiring travelers to log in with a single account across seven airlines.
Lufthansa Group updates check-in process
Lufthansa Group is changing how travelers access check-in on its websites and apps, requiring users to log in with a Travel ID account to get their boarding pass online. This system allows travelers to group their bookings and personal information into one profile. The change affects seven airlines, including Lufthansa, SWISS, and Austrian Airlines, among others.Travel ID is not a travel document
The Travel ID is not an official identification or entry permit for any country. Instead, it is a customer account that allows access to digital services of participating airlines using an email address and password. Travelers must still provide the required documents for their journey, such as passports or visas, as per the flight and destination rules.Travel ID allows access to multiple airlines
With a Travel ID, travelers can access the digital services of all Lufthansa Group airlines from a single account. A profile created with one airline can be used to log in to the services of other airlines in the group. The account can also be linked to the Miles & More loyalty program, though the two functions remain separate.New requirement starts in stages
The new requirement is being rolled out in phases. It begins on October 20, 2026, for flights departing from the Schengen area, except Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Later stages will apply to other regions, with the final phase starting on November 30, 2026, for all other regions and major airports like Frankfurt.Creating a Travel ID account
To create a Travel ID account, travelers need to provide an email address and choose a password. They must then confirm their account by clicking a link in a confirmation email, which is valid for 24 hours. If the link expires, a new registration is needed. Existing Travel ID users do not need to go through this process again.Online check-in process with Travel ID
Online check-in for Lufthansa opens 30 hours before departure. Travelers log in to their Travel ID, then enter the necessary information and travel documents. They can select a seat, add services like luggage or upgrades, and manage seats for others traveling with them. The account serves as the entry point for check-in but does not replace individual passenger verifications.Travel ID aims to simplify travel
Lufthansa Group says the Travel ID is designed to make travel easier by allowing users to store personal data, payment information, and travel documents in one place. This helps reduce the need to re-enter information on future trips. However, occasional travelers may find the extra step of creating an account before check-in slightly more complicated.
