A dolphin named Echo, who was rescued from the now-closed Marineland Canada theme park, has died weeks after being transferred to an aquarium in Spain. Echo arrived at Oceanogràfic València with serious health issues, including blindness and vision problems, which required specialized care. The aquarium reported that Echo was placed in a medical pool and treated by veterinarians after developing respiratory problems and difficulty swallowing. Her condition worsened quickly on Wednesday, and she passed away that night. An autopsy will be conducted by aquarium staff and pathologists from a nearby university to determine the exact cause of her death.
Echo was one of four dolphins rescued from Marineland Canada. The other animals are reportedly doing well under the care of Oceanogràfic València staff. Another beluga whale, Jelly Bean, who was also rescued from Marineland, died at the same aquarium in July. The facility is still looking into the cause of that death as well.
Marineland Canada closed in 2024 after its owners passed away, but the park continued to care for its animals, including dolphins and 30 beluga whales. In October 2025, the park warned that it would have to euthanize the animals if they couldn't be relocated. In July 2026, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced a plan to relocate 28 beluga whales to accredited aquariums in the United States. The remaining two belugas were sent to Oceanogràfic València in Spain.
In recent weeks, several other animals rescued from Marineland Canada have died. Three beluga whales sent to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago died within a month of each other, raising concerns about their health when they were rescued. A fourth beluga whale, who had been part of the Shedd's beluga pod for a long time, also recently died at the aquarium. Marineland Canada had faced criticism long before it closed for the treatment of its animals. Since 2019, 20 whales, including 19 belugas, have died at the park. Inspectors had previously said that all the animals were in distress due to poor water quality. NOAA has noted in a letter to American aquariums that the whales from Marineland are "health-compromised." Shedd Aquarium staff are also investigating the causes of the recent deaths.
