Apple has launched the Mac Studio M5 Ultra, a high-end desktop computer aimed at creative professionals and artificial intelligence (AI) developers. This new model features two M5 Max chips combined into one, making it the only Mac Studio variant with up to 512GB of unified memory—memory that can be used for both processing and data storage simultaneously. The M5 Ultra starts at $5,500, a steep jump from the previous M3 Ultra model's base price of $4,000. A higher-end version with 256GB of RAM, a 36-core CPU, and 2TB of storage costs $11,299, significantly more than the M3 Ultra with similar specs, which was priced at $7,499. The M5 Max model, which has up to 128GB of memory, begins at $5,899. The Mac Studio keeps its compact, rounded-square aluminum design, standing 3.7 inches tall and measuring 7.7 inches in length and width. It includes a range of ports, such as two Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports on the front of the M5 Ultra model, four Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports on the back, two USB-A ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, a 10Gb Ethernet port, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The Thunderbolt 5 ports can transfer data at speeds up to 120 Gbps, but accessories that support these high speeds are still quite expensive. The M5 Ultra model is equipped with a 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU, and a 32-core neural engine, offering performance improvements of up to 20 to 30 percent over the M3 Ultra model in CPU, GPU, and neural engine benchmarks. In synthetic tests, the M5 Ultra scored 52,185 in the multi-core CPU test, compared to the M3 Ultra’s 39,145. It also performed better in content creation tasks, such as exporting a nine-minute 4K timeline in under two minutes, much faster than the MacBook M3 Pro. Apple claims the M5 Ultra can run "frontier-class" AI models with billions of parameters locally, thanks to its 512GB of unified memory and 1.2TB/s bandwidth. For example, using Mac Whisper, a 70-minute podcast was transcribed in just 18 seconds, faster than the M4 Max’s performance. Apple also suggests that multiple M5 Ultra models can be linked via Thunderbolt 5 to form a cluster, which could process AI tasks three times faster than a single machine. However, this configuration has not been tested due to the high cost. The Mac Studio M5 Ultra can run games like Baldur's Gate III smoothly at 4K resolution with 60 fps on "Ultra" settings, though it may be outperformed by Windows PCs with more powerful dedicated GPUs. While the M5 Ultra is a powerful machine, its high price might not be justified for all users. For content creators, the M5 Max model with an 18-core CPU and 40-core GPU could be a more cost-effective choice, while AI developers might find the M5 Max with 128GB of RAM sufficient if budget allows.
