BYD reaches one million employees

The Chinese automaker BYD now employs more than one million people globally, according to a recent report. This includes 960,000 workers in China and 60,000 involved in international operations.

Growth and fluctuations in workforce

BYD’s workforce has grown significantly over recent years, from about 570,000 employees at the end of 2022 to 703,500 by the end of 2023. However, the company experienced a slight slowdown in 2025, reaching 869,600 employees before adding 150,000 new workers between January and October of this year.

High number of engineers

BYD has 120,000 engineers, a substantial figure that reflects the company's focus on innovation and in-house development. This workforce supports the company’s diverse product lines and technological advancements.

Vehicle production per employee

In 2025, BYD sold at least 4.6 million vehicles, which equates to about 5.3 cars per employee. This ratio is lower compared to competitors like Tesla, Volkswagen, and Toyota, which produce more vehicles per employee.

Diverse business activities

Beyond vehicle manufacturing, BYD operates in energy storage systems and railway equipment. Its subsidiary, BYD Electronic, specializes in electronic device manufacturing and employs 165,000 people, contributing to the company’s extensive value chain.

Vertical integration strategy

BYD’s strategy of producing its own batteries, electric motors, and electronic components allows it to reduce reliance on external suppliers. This approach helps the company maintain control over production costs and offer competitive pricing to customers.
