A special $1 coin featuring the portrait of former President Donald Trump has been released, marking the first time a living person has appeared on U.S. currency in over 100 years. The U.S. Mint introduced the commemorative coin to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States. The coin includes the phrase "In God we trust" and is described by the Mint as reflecting "the spirit, pride, and legacy of a nation approaching its landmark anniversary." These coins are available for purchase in sets, with a roll of 25 costing $61 and a bag of 100 priced at $154.50. However, the Mint's website reported that the coins were "not currently in stock" shortly after becoming available. The U.S. Mint stated the coin was created to celebrate "this historic national milestone" and is intended to be a "standout addition to modern collections." Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had previously mentioned plans to issue a new $250 bill with the president's portrait. However, U.S. law prohibits the printing of currency with the image of a living person. Despite this, Trump's allies in Congress have introduced legislation to create an exception, though the proposal has not yet moved forward. In May, Bessent noted that another living U.S. president had previously appeared on currency. A half-dollar issued in 1926 to commemorate America's 150th anniversary featured then-President Calvin Coolidge. The Trump administration has also referenced the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020, which bans portraits of living people on the reverse (tails side) of coins but does not explicitly cover the obverse (heads side), where Trump's likeness appears on the new $1 coins. Additionally, the Thayer Amendment of 1866 bans the portrait of any living person on U.S. notes, though this has not traditionally applied to coins.
