With rising fuel prices, the monthly cost of running a gasoline-powered car is now nearly three times higher than that of an electric vehicle. According to the Roole Data platform, which analyzes public data on automobiles, the cost of fuel for gasoline cars has increased by 25 euros over the first half of the year, rising from 112 euros to 137 euros per month. In contrast, electric vehicle owners spend around 46 euros per month on energy, a figure that has remained stable since August 2022. This growing disparity has placed a heavier financial burden on drivers of traditional gasoline and diesel vehicles. The surge in fuel prices has been driven by geopolitical tensions, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route for global oil supplies. Nearly a quarter of the world’s oil production passes through this area, and recent instability has contributed to higher prices. As a result, the cost of using a gasoline-powered car has significantly outpaced that of an electric vehicle, which is not affected by fluctuations in oil prices. Meanwhile, the price of SP95 gasoline remains above 2 euros per liter in France, adding to the financial strain on drivers. Diesel vehicles have also seen a notable increase in fuel costs. Between January and June, the average monthly fuel budget for diesel cars rose from 98 euros to 119 euros. Non-rechargeable hybrids, which combine a traditional engine with an electric motor, saw their monthly fuel costs increase by 20 euros, reaching 111 euros in June. Rechargeable hybrids, which can be charged from an external power source, have slightly lower fuel costs, averaging 88 euros per month in June, provided they are regularly recharged. However, this amount has still increased by 10 euros since the start of the year. Looking ahead, the cost of running a gasoline-powered car in 2025 is expected to average 119 euros per month, while diesel cars will cost around 94 euros, and electric vehicles will remain the most economical option at approximately 45 euros per month. As fuel prices continue to rise, the economic advantage of electric vehicles is likely to become even more pronounced, influencing consumer choices and the automotive market.
