Nvidia's latest graphics card technology, known as DLSS 5, has sparked concerns due to its significant demand for power and resources. This has led many to worry, especially given that Nvidia's high-end graphics cards have had recurring issues with overheating at their power connectors for several years. These problems first became widely known with the RTX 4090 in 2022, and more recently, the RTX 5090 has also faced similar reports, sometimes forcing users to take extreme steps to avoid damage.
One user, Erek, shared his experience with VideoCardz, describing how he encountered a fire on the 16-pin power connector of his RTX 5090 after using DLSS 5. He tested Nvidia's new Neural Rendering feature on his MSI GeForce RTX 5090 Gaming Trio OC, which caused the card to draw over 600 watts of total graphics power (TGP), far exceeding the card's expected maximum of 575 watts. The power consumption spiked to a peak of 613.5 watts, which ultimately caused the connector to fail and melt.
Erek noted that the card continued to consume over 610 watts for a prolonged period after DLSS 5 was activated, leading to the complete failure of the card. He also mentioned the difficulty in unplugging the card after the incident, a problem that is clearly visible in the photos he shared. While DLSS 5 clearly contributed to the problem, it is not the sole cause. As VideoCardz points out, the issues with the 16-pin connectors on the RTX 90 series have been known for some time.
Despite this, the increased power demands of DLSS 5 may worsen the existing issues with these connectors, making such incidents more common. While it is still too early to label DLSS 5 as inherently dangerous, the combination of high power consumption and known hardware weaknesses suggests that similar problems may become more frequent in the near future.
