Sonos introduces updated headphones

Sonos has released the Ace Ultra, an enhanced version of its Ace Bluetooth headphones, designed to work more closely with its home audio products through a new feature that allows transferring audio between speakers and headphones.

Feature enables Wi-Fi audio transfer

The feature lets users stream music from their Sonos home system to the headphones using Wi-Fi, with setup done through the Sonos app. Users pair the headphones with the system in the app and initiate the transfer by holding a clickable cursor on the headphones while music is playing.

Limitations in compatibility and functionality

The headphones do not support Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, or other third-party streaming services. The transfer only works when the music is played directly through Sonos' own protocol via the Sonos app, limiting its usefulness for many users.

User interaction required for control

While Sonos claims the transfer can be done without a smartphone, users must reselect the Ace Ultra in the app to control playback. Changing tracks is treated as a new stream, restarting playback on the speakers, which is not very user-friendly.

Transfer works only for a limited time

The audio transfer feature works only for a few minutes before requiring a switch to a classic Bluetooth connection if the Wi-Fi network is out of range. When returning home, the system detects the Wi-Fi network before entering, but the app does not remember the transferred stream once the connection is lost.

Feature criticized as limited and gimmicky

Overall, the feature is viewed as somewhat gimmicky, functioning well in one direction but requiring smartphone use and facing incompatibility with popular streaming methods like Spotify Connect.
